September 2019

Greetings once more in the name of our marvelous Lord and savior Jesus Christ! As I think of September, I remember a wonderfully funny advertisement from Staples that comes out each year around this time. The music playing is “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” Mom is frolicking through Staples with her shopping cart, while the voiceover talks about all the specials. Near the end, you see two sullen children turning the corner while mom glides by on the cart. BACK TO SCHOOL days and daze. Well done Staples. I have to admit, personally, that back to school was not the most wonderful time of the year for me. It was, however, something I looked forward to. I grew up in the country and many of my friends lived miles away, so I didn’t see them all summer. It also meant I got new clothes for the coming school year (or at least until I got more clothes at Christmas). All in all, I liked school. (Don’t judge me.) O.K., seriously, what I’d like to ponder on for this letter is the value of education. You do realize that there are girls in some countries that literally risk their lives by trying to get an education. Other boys and girls still walk for miles to get to class. Education is highly regarded by most of the world, but not so much in America. We tell our kids “Too bad, school’s coming.” And when there’s a snow day, they are often treated like holidays. Perhaps we should be encouraging our children to want to go to school and feel they missed something important if they miss a day. Remember, Proverbs 23 verse 12 says “Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to knowledge.” Verse 23 says “Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction and insight as well.” As “the most wonderful time of the year” approaches, maybe we can say an extra prayer for the teachers, aids, school nurses, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and coaches who will be teaching and caring for all our lovely, perfectly behaved children. We might want to do something as a church to show our teachers our appreciation. If anyone is interested, talk to me. I have a few ideas. So, schools start up, leaves start falling, sweaters come out, our Father’s world turns some amazing colors, and life goes on. May this change of season be a wonderful time of year for you and your loved ones. I will say goodbye as I remain…in His Service – Pastor Brian
